The Great Big Road Trip
Wow. Over a month. Wow. This seems to be how I start most of my blogs this year!
But in my defense...I do have a few explanations this time around. First, my computer completely crashed towards the end of July. I had to re-install my operating system, and when I first turned on my computer post crash...the only thing on my desktop was my recycling bin. Sigh. Thankfully, Carbonite had all of my files backed up. Still, it has taken me over a week to get everything restored and all of my programs re-installed. My nextexcuse explanation is that I took a 2 week trip with my boys south to see all of their grand and great grandparents! I thought you might be interested in some of those pictures/stories, so here goes.
We started in Asheville. Adam had a family friendly work conference and we tagged along. During the day the boys and I took advantage of one of our museum membership reciprocal advantages and visited both The Health Adventure and Nature Center Museums. Here are some highlights...
Next up was a trip to Gram's house in north Georgia. This is where we had to say goodbye to daddy. I headed out on a 10 day adventure with my boys solo. If I wasn't crazy before I left on this trip I am pretty sure I came back that way! But thankfully, the grandparents welcomed us every step of the way with fun activities, yummy food, and they gave mama a break too!
We visited the Chattanooga Aquarium...the boys had a blast!
These next two pictures are not great pictures...but the story that goes with them is one to be recorded as a reminder of how much Ben adores and emulates his big brother. Carter walks up to this turtle tank and just stretches himself out to cover as much of the glass as possible. I have no idea why he did this.
But the next thing I know...Ben has taken note and done the exact same pose at the opposite tank.
The boys loved the scuba diver cleaning the tank
And Ben got to hold a butterfly. Definitely one of the stillest moments he has ever been in my arms!
Ben was making a pretty mean shark noise. I wonder how he knows what a shark might sound like?
Then we had dinner with my 99 year-old granddaddy! It was a treat to have my aunt, uncle and one of the 5 cousins there too!
This is one of my two cousins named Ben. (or Benjamin as the elder prefers to be called now!) Little Ben, meet Big Ben.
Granddaddy loved having the boys close to him!
Our next destination...Poppa & Nana's house. I definitely enjoyed some r&r here.
But we played hard too! Carter did not want to get out of the lake. Ever.
I think I ate most of the okra from their garden. :) And I tried to put a dent in their tomatoes...but I am pretty sure that is impossible.
When we left the lake, we headed to Gramma's house (poppa's mom)
She lives on a farm and the boys always enjoy the cows. We got to take the jeep into the pastures and a couple of cows got pretty friendly.
The boys also got to play hide and seek in the hay bales. Ben just walked up to one and stood there facing the hay. His version of hiding is that if he can't see us, we can't see him. :)
After Gramma's we headed to Birmingham to see Mimi, Granddaddy, GG, and the boys' favorite aunt, uncle, and cousins! There was LOTS of laughter and noise.
We visited the McWane Center with Granddaddy...
Enjoyed some visits with GG...
Carter loved on his new baby girl cousin Camille...
We have all enjoyed the Olympics and the big boys got to stay up a few extra minutes every night to watch some of the games.
We also snapped a few new pictures of the five cousins.
Our original itinerary ended here...but Adam ended up flying down for a funeral. One of our dear friend's father ended his battle to lung cancer. We were both able to attend the service...and it truly was a celebration of his life.
We made a quick stop at Mimi's house...and then we headed home the next morning.
Are you exhausted reading all of this? Because I was certainly exhausted at the end of the great big road trip! But I would do it again in a minute! Thanks to all of you that hosted us along the way...maybe we can do it again next year?
