For once I was glad to see Monday this week. And more specifically I was glad it was not last Monday! Last week was just one of those weeks. Here is a run down day by day:
Monday:Kept Ben home from school because he was feverish and coughing.
Pick Carter up from school and come home for lunch.
While I am in the kitchen and both boys are in the dining room I hear a VERY loud crash. Run to the dining room and Ben is on the floor in his high chair. He was strapped into the chair and his head was on the floor. The story I got from Carter is that he was climbing on the chair to tell Ben something when it fell over.
I try to comfort Ben for 10 minutes or so and he just sobs. Poor guy. I was on the fence about taking him to the dr. for his cold, so I definitely call now.
Ben is acting fairly normal and never lost consciousness, so they tell me to bring him in later that afternoon. Well, just before we get off the phone, I lift Ben's head off of my shoulder (was rocking him) and I notice he has spit up on my shirt.
That changed everything. They tell me to take him to the ER to get everything checked out.
Cue the flood of tears. I called Adam with tears streaming down my cheeks fearing the worst. He heads home and we head to ER.
After a 1 1/2 hour wait...I was feeling ok about Ben. Well, truthfully, I was worried about his cold. But he was acting normal and there was no swelling on his head so I was hopeful the chair took the brunt of the fall.
The dr. confirmed all seemed to be ok and we headed back home.
Monday night was a bit of a blur. Ben woke up just about every 45 minutes, but I think it was more cold related instead of fall related.
Tuesday: We take Ben to the dr. first thing in the morning after the long night and they confirm he has a nasty cold. His ears looked ok, but they went ahead and gave us some amoxicillan to fight off the very start of an ear infection. The rest of that day he battled a 102+ fever. I never got it below 101 even with Tylenol.
Wednesday:We continue to fight the cold and the fever. Ben is puny and fussy. That afternoon we switch to Motrin and the fever FINALLY responds! His fever actually started last Saturday so he had been battling it for 5 days!
Thursday: I wake up with a pretty bad case of laryngitis. Pretty tough to chase around 2 toddlers and get them to listen to you when your loudest yell is a whisper! Although a couple of times Carter did whisper back...which was cute. Thankfully Adam stayed home that day to help care for the boys. Not sure I would have made it without his help.
Friday: I can creak out a few words. Carter heads to school and Ben and I stay home for the fussiest morning I can remember. He had a full out tantrum! At 17 months. He layed on the floor. Screamed. Threw pacis. Threw Milk. Kicked his legs. Screamed some more. We went on a walk outside to try to distract him from the tantrum and it did help. Until we got a a corner and mommy decided to go a way different than the way Ben wanted to go. Cue another meltdown where he just turns to spaghetti when I try to pick him up. Whew. What a morning.
Carter ends up with a fever that night before bed. Lovely. Here we go again.
Saturday: Carter is feverish but acts fairly cheerful. Ben has another full fledged tantrum. At this point I start worrying that it is due to the fall from Monday. So we call the dr. and they tell me he is just irritable from the virus. I wasn't convinced but was willing to give it another day or two. The dr. encourages us to ignore it if we can and just make sure he is in a safe place to vent. She told me the more we respond to his actions the more he will continue. I must admit, we were responding to the tantrum because I was just concerned something else was wrong.
Sunday:Carter's fever is all done! Whoo hoo!
Ben has a mini tantrum but we 'ignore' it and he calms down pretty quickly.
Ben starts to eat again and takes his first good nap in a week. I realize that almost a week of not eating and interrupted napping and sleeping are the main factors to my irritable Ben.
Monday: Both boys at school! Yippee!
And if you made it this far...you deserve some pictures. :)
Here we are waiting to be seen by the dr. in the ER:

Daddy and Carter did some coloring...

Carter shared some pages and his crayons with a sweet 3 yr old boy in the waiting room who was waiting for stitched on his forehead.
Post ER ice cream!

Carter went to a bicycle birthday party last week so we had the helmet out and Ben asked to wear it several times every day. I thought it was fitting after his big tumble. If only he were wearing it when he actually fell!

PS - Grandparents...after last week we were late in getting our Valentine's to you in the mail. Here is a sneak peek of what is on the way...
