Did you know that Old Navy has a secret website? Check out http://www.oldnavyweekly.com/ for deals every Thursday. Sometimes they have $50 off a $100 purchase or even $75 off a $100 purchase but so far I have only been able to find 20% off 2 items, or $5 of a $25 purchase or something similar. Apparently Old Navy reloads the site every Thursday with new deals and there are only a limited number of deals each week. Check early and often - the great deals disappear quickly!

Once you open the secret website you need to run your mouse over the different sections of the website and click whenever your pointer changes to a hand. For example, in this week's ad I clicked on the girl with the pink ruffle camisole and got a $5 off my next $25 purchase coupon. Then I clicked on the face of the girl with the white sleeveless top and blue capris and it popped up with a box that said "SCAM - no more coupons, check back again next week." So I guess there was a good one there that I missed!

Better Late than Never

Hard to believe it was two weeks ago that Carter and I left before the crack of dawn to visit family and friends down south. We had a fantastic visit. We stayed with my sister-in-law who always opens her home to us and all of our stuff. We had less stuff this time since we flew but that meant we had to borrow lots from her which she had ready for us when we arrived. Thanks Susan! It is always a treat to stay with you and your boys.

Speaking of her boys - it was so much fun to watch the cousins play with each other. Robert was so excited to see Carter. In fact, Robert is always excited to see anyone who comes to his house whether it be Mimi, Poppa & Nana, Adam, etc. - and although we are all pretty fun visitors I have always been impressed with the way Susan and Warren build the excitement and anticipation of visitors. They have been doing this for a couple of years and you can tell Robert has been expecting you whenever you arrive. Now that he is older they are working on teaching days and how long it will be before someone visits - a good lesson to learn. For example as soon as we arrived he asked, "when is Adam coming?" I told him Adam would be here when he woke up Saturday morning, which then translated to "not tomorrow, not the next day, but the next."

We let them play together lots and even managed to have all three boys taking afternoon naps together most days. But we did force one semi-formal photo shoot. A couple of hundred photos later we ended up with a couple of cute shots.
Isn't this shot of Robert and Carter precious? Carter loved watching his big cousin Robert and tried to keep up with him as much as possible. Robert would slow down every once in a while to come sit with Carter and play with him very gently. It was very sweet.

I wasn't sure how the Eastern/Central time difference would affect Carter's sleep. There was so much excitement in the afternoon that I was able to keep him up until 7:00 central time which was an hour later for his internal clock time. I was hoping this would help him sleep until 7:00 central time in the morning (despite the fact that everything I have read said babies sleeping clocks don't work that way!) But Carter woke anywhere from 5:00-6:00 each morning which meant I was very glad and eager to visit my favorite coffee shop from home each morning. What a treat. :) Another highlight from the trip was all the grandparent time we were able to pack in. Carter's grandparents live in four different cities but they are close enough together that when we are close enough to visit one we try to visit all. It can be tricky - but all of the grandparents are flexible which really helps. In the end all of the crazy scheduling and traveling is totally worth it. Carter's Granddaddy and GG came by to see him every day and laughed so hard a couple of time he got tears in his eyes. Poppa spent Wednesday night with his three grandsons {even though he wasn't feeling well :) } and came back again on Saturday for more fun. Mimi came up for a visit on Thursday and even did some babysitting while Susan and I ran a couple of errands on Friday. And Gram and Gramma came for a BBQ lunch gathering on Saturday. Wow. Although I ended up taking more pictures of the 3 boys than the grandparent's I just couldn't resist posting this picture of Carter and Granddaddy on the swing. The weather was absolutely perfect while we were there. We were able to play outside every day - which meant lots of swing time. Jack and Carter took turns on the swing - and Jack was even kind enough to bring Carter a truck to hold on to while he was swinging. What a sweetie.Their house is like a giant playground in the afternoon. From 4-6 or so in the afternoon there were anywhere from 10-20 kids playing in their yard and driveway. One of the favorite toys is this Gator. Robert is a pro at driving it - but he has had plenty of practice thanks to Jack who will sit in the Gator until someone comes to drive him around. The Gator is parked in the garage when not in use and Jack will go sit in the Gator in the garage facing the wall with his hands holding on ready to go until someone comes to start driving. Hilarious. Only a matter of time before Jack realizes he can make the Gator move himself!
All in all it was a wonderful visit with lots of laughter and many special memories. In addition to all the great family time I had some special friend time too. A good friend of mine from high school had a baby while we were there so I was able to visit her in the hospital and meet her precious baby Owen - Congratulations JoAnna! I also had dinner with several of my college friends plus kids - more to come on that later. Phew. What a trip. I was exhausted for at least a couple of days once we got home but it was totally worth it. Believe it or not I am ready to do it again!

Heat Wave

It has been hot. Very very hot. We have broken 90 degrees for the past 4 days. Thankfully the heat wave is supposed to break tomorrow and we can enjoy at least a few more days (hopefully weeks) of spring. I am blaming the weather for my lack of posts recently. You see, our computer is in a small room that is an addition to our house and this small room lacks air conditioning. Can you see why I have been away from the blog? Plus, my favorite time to blog is during Carter's morning nap with a cup of coffee which just makes things hotter! But, here I am to share just a bit with a promise for more to come later. I really do have LOTS to catch you up on - just need to find the time and some cooler weather to get it done.

With the summer like temperatures this weekend we decided to break out Carter's first swimming pool. Do you think he likes it?

We

have no shade in our backyard so we set it up under our Japanese Maple in the front and we were quickly joined by most of our neighbors. Although Carter was a little unsure of this new contraption he quickly recognized his bath toys and started splashing as much as possible. He also tried to crawl out of the pool so he could play with the grass.

I found the pool at Target for a whopping $12. Besides being a pretty cute pool and the perfect size for Carter I also liked the shade that the turtle shell creates. You can also hook a hose to the pool underneath and it creates a fun spray that comes out of the turtle's head. My only regret about this pool is that we didn't take the advice of the instructions and use a pump to blow it up. Thankfully Adam and I were both around to inflate the pool - it took a lot of air!

A little humor

Anyone who has changed baby boy diapers will get a kick out of this card. I am sending it to my friend JoAnna who just had a baby boy last weekend. I got wet today - and so did Carter.

Guess Who...

...is standing up in his crib?

You got it! Our little man! And doesn't he just look so proud of himself in this picture? After following his adventurous cousins around as fast as possible last week, Carter is exploring our house in new ways. He is pulling up on the ottoman, his stand up toy, even the wall. Just this morning he cruised down the 'alley' between the couch and ottoman. He is also crawling less these days. Instead he pulls up on my legs and reaches for my hands so I can help him walk wherever he wants to go. The only problem with this new found ability is that all he wants to do is stand up in his crib when it is nap/bedtime. Hopefully the newness will wear off and he will return to his good bedtime behavior soon.

Speaking of bedtime behavior, we hit a rough spot for several nights in a row before we left for our trip last week. We have a pretty set bedtime routine: Adam gets Carter ready for bed (bath time, change into sleeper, lotion, etc.), bottle time, Good Night Moon story time, bedtime. But, last week it took over 2 hours for three nights in a row to get him to go to sleep. He would keep bouncing and jumping in our arms when we would hold him wanting to play. If we put him in his crib he would cry for 20 minutes or so until we would go comfort him again. Then the bouncing would start all over again. I have noticed that whenever Carter eats throughout the day he gets a boost of energy, so I thought this might be happening with the bedtime bottle as well. I decided to let him play quietly (reading books and such) for 15-20 minutes after the bottle to see if that helped and so far it has. But, I am not sure it will last. I know he still needs the calories from this bedtime bottle, but it seems to be having the reverse effect of making him drowsy for bed. Has anyone else dealt with this? And if so, do you have any tips?

Get Your Green On!

Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day I thought I would share a few ways we are trying to live green. We fall short in many ways, but there are lots of easy things to do that make a difference.

But, before I get started, a picture:

1) Recycle - we started recycling in Charlottesville and have continued at our new home. In Cville you have to pay for every trash bag you set by the curb by placing a sticker on the bag, but recycling is free. At $1.25 a sticker, we started recycling as much as possible and cut down on our sticker usage tremendously. I thought this was a brilliant idea. You pay for what you dump. The less you dump the less you pay. What a great incentive. Once we were in the habit of recycling it was easy to continue. So much of what we use is recyclable - coke cans, milk jugs, baby food jars, cereal boxes, pasta boxes, newspaper - this list goes on and on.
2) Rain Barrel - our new rain barrel is installed and is working great. We had our first rain after installation last Monday night and the barrel was full by the time we awoke Tuesday morning. We have gotten a lot more rain since then but don't have enough room to store it all! Can't you just hear Adam pleading his case for more rain barrels?
3) Light Bulbs - When we moved in we changed all of the light fixtures from incandescent bulbs to fluorescent bulbs. The statistics say that each fluorescent bulb will save $30.00 over its life and will pay for itself in 6 months. We later found out that the incandescent bulbs we bought should not be used with dimmers, and our two multi bulb light fixtures in the entry way and dining room are both on dimmers. But, I guess some savings is better than none!
4) Reusable Grocery Bags - this one is so easy to do but also so easy to forget to do. I have 3 plastic grocery bags stuffed with other plastic grocery bags waiting to take to be recycled because I always forget to bring in the reusable bags. One of the grocery stores in town even gives a 5 cent credit for each reusable bag you use. Any tips for how to remember to actually bring the grocery bags into the store to be used?
5) Less Gas Consumption - I do my best to consolidate errands for the week (at least as much as I can pack in before it is Carter's nap time) and I try to walk to stores in the area when possible. Again, this probably doesn't amount to too much savings, but I always tell myself every little bit helps.

At Home

We set the alarm this morning for 4:15 to begin our trip home which made for a very long day. I am very close to turning out the lights, but wanted to share this fun video with you before calling it a day. This afternoon we strolled to some nearby swings and tried to recreate the fun and giggles we heard a few weeks ago. I think the camera distracted Carter just a little bit, but we still got some good belly laughs. Hope you enjoy.

Fun with Family

It has been a fun-filled few days for Carter and me. We flew down south early Wednesday morning to visit cousins, grandparents, etc. for a few days. This was my first time to fly solo with Carter and it went better than I expected. Although one of my fears did come true (he had a dirty diaper in flight) we both made it on time and without any tears. Once Carter had finished his business on the second flight I asked the flight attendant what my options were for changing his diaper. She told me I could use the itsy bitsy bathroom as a changing room by lowering the toilet lid and straddling Carter while I changed him. Or, I could find an empty row of seats and lay him out there. Neither of those options sounded ideal so I went for option #3 - wait until we land. The flight was only 25 minutes, so this really did seem like the best option. Once we landed, I headed straight for the ladies room. I looked all over for the changing table and finally figured out it was this fancy stainless steel contraption in the wall. I thought I was all set and then I realized the changing table would not lower unless I deposited 4 quarters. WHAT? Have you ever heard of a changing table you have to pay to use? I did not have 4 quarters nor did I want to pay to use the changing table, so I found an empty terminal and gave Carter a clean diaper. He was a trooper through it all.

Once we got settled at his cousins' house, Carter started grinning ear to ear and hasn't stopped yet. His 18 month and 4 1/2 year old cousins are full of energy and are constantly entertaining our little man. Robert, the 4 1/2 year old has been super with Carter. When he first saw Carter he laid down on his stomach and perched his chin in his hands and just stared at Carter and talked to him so sweetly. He has also fed Carter his cereal, given him lots of toys to play with, and loves to watch him crawl around. Jack was a little unsure of this new baby in the house. After all, he is used to being the baby and probably likes it that way. But, this morning we sat Carter and Jack next to each other in their high chairs and they kept reaching out at each other (probably trying to get whatever the other one was eating!) Jack also started bringing Carter toys to play with this morning. A very sweet sharer for the young age of 18 months. Jack would keep the bigger car for himself and give Carter the smaller car to play with.

Check out this picture of the Cousin Band - Robert on guitar and harmonica, Jack on the maracas, and Carter playing with the ribbon attached to the tambourine. It was a lovely musical concoction.

It probably goes without saying that Carter's grandparents have been gushing right and left. But, just in case you were wondering, they have been doing just that. I have plenty more pictures I will share with you once we get back home, just wanted to give you a quick update of what we are up to.

Carter and I are really looking forward to seeing Daddy who arrives tonight!

Our Future All-Star

One of these days we will show him how to use the bat that came with this cute toy, but for now Carter is doing just fine hitting homeruns with his hands and face.

Pros & Cons of Green Living

Adam attended a rain barrel workshop last Sunday and this is what he came home with:

Pros (per Adam, brace yourself...he loves this stuff):
- Reduced Water Bill: Sure, it's just few pennies, but every bit counts. Plus, it has always seemed crazy that we go through the whole process of pumping, treating, and piping drinkable water just to give it to our grass.
- Less Stormwater Runoff: Rather than running off the roof, across the yard, and into the storm drains, the rainwater is stored and slowly released to soak into the ground--reducing erosion and pollution, and replenishing local aquifers.
- Prepared for Water Restrictions: Last summer we were under water restrictions for a good portion of the summer. Sure, my measly 55 gallon rain barrel is not going to keep a thirsty yard lush through a drought, but it will keep my tomatoes strong for a while. With a few more barrels, we'd really be prepared (bam! preemptive strike for Tracy's complaint below).
- Naturally Soft Water for the Garden: I am still learning about this one, but it seems to make sense... the water from the sky is better than the chemically treated municipal water.
- It's Easy.

Cons (per Tracy, if you are still reading after that dissertation):
- this rain barrel used to be a pickle barrel. Yes, pickles have strong odors. Yes, this barrel still smells like pickles!
- not the most attractive addition to our backyard.
- I thought I was done with cinder blocks for good after stacking my dorm bed on said cinder blocks for 4 years in college!
- did I mention this is the ugliest contraption? (I am already scheming some sort of bamboo or lattice work cover to go around it)
- Adam came home with such enthusiasm that he wants to make more of these for the house

Even though I have given Adam a hard time about the lovely pickle barrel he brought home I am excited to be taking a step towards living greener and look forward to using rain water to water our garden. Here's hoping we get some rain this summer!

Carter loves sitting in his daddy's lap to read a book (or two or three). The picture on the left was taken back in September when Carter was just 3 months old. Look at him now 6 months later. My favorite difference is his chubby legs.

Spring is Springing

Happy Easter!

I hope each of you has a special Easter Sunday full of hope and joy.

We have a dogwood tree in our front yard that fully bloomed this past week. It is one of my favorite trees and I especially enjoy its blooms because of the Easter symbolism. Legend has it that the dogwood tree was used to make the cross of the crucifixion and the blooms are now a memory of the crucifixion. The four petals represent the cross. The petals often have brownish/red spots at the outer edge which represents nail marks and the blood of Christ. Finally, the center of the flower represents the crown of thorns worn by Jesus at the crucifixion. What a beautiful reminder of why we celebrate Easter. Adam gathered a spring bouquet for me yesterday morning with some other blooms from our yard. There are dogwood blooms in the front and then some white apple blossoms in the back of the vase. The yellow bloom is from our jasmine vine (yes! it survived our manipulation!) And the pink flowers are from our azalea bushes. What a gorgeous time of year!Here is a picture of the finished jasmine artwork. Once the vines start growing they will fill in the empty spots where there is just wire for now. But we are very excited that the plants are blooming and seem to be in good health after all of the change we put them through.




And finally, we have our vegetable garden in progress. We started seeds a couple of weekends ago and everything is germinating. Here is a quick list of what we have started: tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes (lots of varieties!), bell peppers, hot peppers, zucchini, squash, eggplant, basil, cilantro, and lavender. We also have some other seeds ready to go straight in the garden once we get our raised beds constructed.

We tried a new technique this year for our starters. We used plastic containers with seed starting soil but we experimented with a newspaper trick. We cut some newspaper into small squares and formed pouches two sheets thick to stuff into the containers. When it is time to transplant the idea is that the newspaper will create a bit of a temperature buffer and then disintegrate. We took the every other container approach so if this experiment fails we should still have some good starters. We will let you know how it works out.

Here are the shining stars so far - our zucchini and squash starters. They have the biggest and greenest starter leaves and have shot up in record time.

Unpacking - Four Years Later

In May, 2005 we packed up our apartment in Atlanta and put everything in storage. We spent the summer traveling to see friends and family around the country and also spent six weeks backpacking through Europe. At the end of our travels we moved to Charlottesville so Adam could start law school. We downsized considerably, from a 1200 square foot apartment in Atlanta full of newlywed gifts to a <600 square foot apartment with very limited storage. So, we left many boxes of stuff we thought we could do without for 3+ years stored at our mothers’ houses. Well, as patient as she has been, my mom is finally ready to start emptying her house of our excess stuff. She arrived this weekend with a car full of boxes that we had packed several years ago. We spent the night opening these boxes and deciding where everything should go. Some of the boxes were rather entertaining. Here are a few of the highlights.

Waffle maker – how did we live without this for over 3 years? We made waffles Sunday morning and they were YUMMY!
Crow bar – When I pulled this out of the box Adam’s face lit up and he said “I have been looking for that forever!”
Tracy’s college memorabilia box – a letter from the former Arthur Andersen (with whom I had accepted a full time job) assuring me the recent Enron troubles would not affect my job. A few weeks/months later I got my first pink slip before even starting the job!

There was one (major) disappointment. Let me explain. We had a pretty detailed packing method. And when I say detailed, I mean over the top. But I wanted to make sure when we were packing up the apartment that we had a clear system for what boxes should come with us to Charlottesville and what boxes needed to stay behind for a few years. So, any box with a number came with us and any box with a letter stayed behind. I also had a detailed list of what was in each box so I could find the essentials when we unpacked things after being in storage for the summer. For example, LR-4 (Living Room box #4) came to Charlottesville and LR-J (Living Room box #J) stayed behind.

Can you say accountant? OCD? check and check.

As mom was loading up her car she told me LR-J was very heavy and that she would prefer to open it and repack into lighter loads. So, I consulted my handy dandy list and told her that would be fine – my list said that box contained books and our x-box. When we were unpacking Saturday night, I was anxiously awaiting the opening of LR-J. Indeed it was very heavy. Yes, there were many books in the box – but no x-box. How could that be? How could my packing system fail me? I looked at my list again and it still said “LR-J – x-box and books.” Where had I gone wrong? I looked at the list one more time, and that is when I noticed a second LR-J that said “books and cds.” Somehow we ended up with 2 LR-J boxes (read: Adam definitely labeled those boxes.) Alas, the x-box is still packed away somewhere. It is probably best – I am sure we would have wasted many hours this weekend playing SSX Tricky (our only game) if we had opened the right box.

The Sweetest Thing

Just put Carter down for a nap. Even though he prefers sleeping on his stomach I still put him in the crib on his back as recommended by the Back to Sleep campaign. He was pretty calm and still when I laid him down but fussed just a little bit to make me nervous that he might get cranked up. Then he rolled over to his side, reached out for Hippie (his comfort blanket) and continued to roll to his stomach until he found his comfy spot. His right hand held Hippie tight and he dozed off.

It is the sweetest thing in the world to watch your baby sleep. (especially when he didn't sleep at all for you the day before!)

It's Grillin' Time

We have taken our grill out of hibernation and I am super excited. Not only is Adam an excellent griller, but cooking outside usually means less mess to clean up in the kitchen. Definitely an added bonus. Plus, as the weather continues to warm, and as Carter learns to walk, I look forward to grilling outside with Carter running around in the grass. Here are just a few meals we’ve cooked on the grill so far this year…

Cheeseburgers – kind of feel like you have to break in the grill for the year with some good ole’ cheeseburgers. Adam also grilled some onions to go on the burgers.

Chicken Teriyaki – we marinated and grilled the chicken and pineapple, with grilled asparagus on the side.

Lamb Kebobs – a new recipe from Real Simple, we made a yummy cucumber, feta, onion relish to go on the side.

A Visit from Gram

Gram traveled nine hours by car to see her sweet Carter this weekend. And would you believe that the Easter Bunny decided to visit Carter again? This time he wrapped a few gifts for Carter.
Carter's Great Grandparent's gave him this adorable and very soft bunny book. Carter loves all things that hinge right now. He is more interested in turning pages than what is on the page. He loves to open and close the laptop lid on his stand up toy. Basically anything that can go back and forth over and over again.

Mom, the ever faithful Braves fan, gave Carter his first baseball set. The ball just swings around and around. It comes with a bat too, but for now Carter just likes to make the ball move with his hands.

The highlight of the weekend for all four of us was a trip to the playground on Sunday afternoon. Once there I put Carter in the Baby Bjorn and we headed for the swings. Carter loved the swings. He held onto the chains with his hands just below mine. He giggled and smiled. Loved it. I thought at that moment he was the happiest baby in the world. Then Adam started swinging in the swing next to us. Carter started laughing and couldn't contain himself. It was a full belly laugh with big gasps of excitement. We of course started laughing uncontrollably too. What joy!

We sure did enjoy Gram's visit and were sad to see her go. Something tells me she won't be able to stay away from her sweet Carter for too long though...

Lullaby by Jack Hammer

This showed up on a tree right outside our house last Monday. When I looked up and down the street, I noticed at least half of our street had similar signs.
On Tuesday this was the view from our living room window.

The city came by to repave several rough spots on our road. The jack hammering started about 30 minutes before Carter’s morning nap. I was a little worried Carter wouldn’t be able to sleep through all of the noise. Plus – we had another small pit pat leak the previous weekend through the roof so we had roofers on our house at the exact same time as all of the road work. Quite a combination. But, it didn’t faze Carter in the slightest. He took a great nap and woke up eager to continue watching the road work. What a sleeper.

On the Road to Recovery

Although the recent posts show a happy healthy baby boy, our poor Carter has been fighting several bugs over the past 10 days. It started last Sunday (3/22) with a fever and a cold. His nose was running non stop and his dirty diaper production really increased. By Wednesday he wasn't keeping any food down and his fever was 101.5. I took him to the pediatrician and they thought he might have caught the Roseola virus. This virus brings high temps and an upset stomach and then when the fever breaks the body breaks out in a rash of small red dots. On Friday his temperature started to break so I anxiously checked his stomach and back at every diaper change expecting to see the red dots appear. Nothing. By Monday morning, Carter was still not eating and was still having tummy troubles (let's just say it was a colorful week). I was a bit worried he was starting to get dehydrated. He was definitely losing more fluid than I was able to get in him. I tried nursing him more often, giving him formula, water in a sippy cup, Pedialyte in a sippy cup or bottle - he just wasn't interested. So the nurse agreed we should visit the pediatrician again. At this appointment we learned Carter had an ear infection. So, we are now on antibiotics, Carter is eating again, and his diapers are just about back to normal. Phew. What a week.

Here is a video we took this weekend. Hard to believe he was fighting a stomach bug and ear infection with all this babbling. (A couple of videographer notes: Sorry for the sideways view - I forgot you can't rotate a video. Also, he is wearing a diaper - he had just soiled his outfit and it was almost bathtime which is the reason for the clotheless baby.)

A Visit from Mimi

Mimi (aka BabySitter Extraordinaire) visited this weekend. We needed a babysitter during our big race and Mimi was eager to volunteer. In fact, she pretty much volunteered to babysit the entire weekend. Adam and I were able to have a date Saturday night, run some errands both afternoons for the house and our garden, and enjoy a cup of coffee at our local coffee shop on Sunday morning. All the while Carter was enjoying some playtime and paparazzi sessions with Mimi. The reports from Mimi said Carter was an angel, despite being sick (more to come on that later) but I don't think Mimi would ever think spending time with Carter would be difficult.



Somehow the Easter Bunny managed to show up with Mimi. Check out this cute basket. Carter loved the wiffle balls (perfect for him to poke his fingers through) and the new books. Mommy and Daddy loved the chocolate treats!









The weather on Sunday was gorgeous so we took a trip up to our local botanical garden. We are fortunate to live so close to such a beautiful garden - plus they have a children's garden with lots of activities throughout the year for little ones. You might remember we visited last summer for a night of Tomatoes and Jazz. This time we decided to become members for the year so we can take advantage of all future events. Really looking forward to it.



Here is a shot of Carter showing off his latest attempt at walking. He stumbles forward with help from Daddy and always looks so proud of himself (as he should - he is getting to be such a big boy!!!) I can't wait for spring/summer to get here and stay - loving my baby boy in these adorable shorts!
